About

Chelsea Kramer is a self-taught textile artist living in Victoria, BC, Canada. Born on the West Coast, her work most often reflects the ocean, mountains and skies that she has been surrounded by her entire life. Her current work is an exploration on how she connects to the world around her via handwoven tapestries, which are created on a 6 foot by 6 foot tapestry loom. She works with all natural materials such as wool, linen, alpaca and silk as she feels more connected to the natural world around her when weaving with these fibers.

Chelsea has explored multiple forms of art over the years, including silversmithing, watercolor and acrylic painting. Painting abstract seascapes allowed her to observe and capture the ocean in a raw, emotional form and silversmithing required her to be much more precise and methodical in her work. These elements often come together to combine abstract and precision in ways that truly highlight her weaving skills. She draws inspiration from bold landscapes as well as artists such as A.J. Casson and Franklin Carmichael and strives to weave with the light and color that she appreciates in their work. Her work hangs in private collections across Canada and the United States.

Chelsea creates each weaving in her home studio on beautiful Vancouver Island and then sends each piece to her framer to be wrapped up in custom poplar frames. Her weavings are created while surrounded by quaking aspens, cedars, birdsong, the clucking of her beloved chickens and the smell of the ocean in the air.
